EVERYTHING SPINS: EXPERIMENTAL FILM IN THE SOCIALIST REPUBLIC OF SLOVENIA, 1960s-80s
July 25 – July 27
July 25-27, 2025
In the wake of Nace Zavrl’s series, “Interceptions: Yugoslavia in the Image World”, Anthology presents a series focusing more specifically on experimental film production in Slovenia from the 1960s to 1980s. Over the last decade-plus, the Slovenian Cinematheque has been actively preserving and digitizing almost 200 short experimental films from the period, revealing an extraordinary body of works. Paying tribute to the Slovenian Cinematheque’s heroic efforts, this series is anchored by three screenings of the remarkable new documentary ALPE-ADRIA UNDERGROUND! – which draws from these new preservations to construct an exhilarating and beautifully edited survey of the filmmakers and films that have come to light – as well as three programs of the newly digitized works themselves. Reflecting many of the formal and expressive innovations that were being explored at the time in the U.S., Western Europe, Japan, and elsewhere, but with a highly distinctive and regionally specific set of concerns, the experimental films created in Slovenia during this period add a fascinating new chapter to the story of global avant-garde cinema.
Guest-programmed by Matevž Jerman (Slovenian Cinematheque).
