THAT VERY WITCH

August 27 – August 31

August 27-31, 2025

Payton McCarty-Simas’s new book, “That Very Witch: Fear, Feminism, and the American Witch Film”, explores the relationship between feminist movements in America and the witch-themed horror films that responded to them, drawing a throughline across more than fifty years of cinema to unpack the powerful sway this cinematic boogeywoman holds over our cultural imagination. To celebrate the publication of “That Very Witch”, we’ve invited McCarty-Simas to select a handful of films that were particularly important to the formation of the book. The films she’s chosen – some familiar, some less so – represent some of the stranger, more idiosyncratic, or rougher-around-the-edges examples of the subgenre as it’s developed over time. These four films bring you a cavalcade of acid trips, burlesque shows, giant ghost birds, and laserbeams, casting feminist spells that have either earned them a rightful place in the cult canon, or deserve to!
