DOCLISBOA – CARTE BLANCHE
January 9 – January 11
January 9-11, 2026
Anthology is pleased to present a special tribute to one of the most invaluable, adventurous, and challenging of international film festivals: Doclisboa, which was founded in 2002 and takes place each fall in Lisbon, Portugal. This showcase of highlights from the 2025 edition of the festival includes a compilation of films by the early cinema maker Gabriel Veyre, a selection of contemporary short films and features by Nate Lavey, Angela Summereder, Manel Raga Raga, Carlos Conceição, and Hassen Ferhani, and the U.S. premiere screenings of EIGHTY PLUS, the new film by Serbian director Želimir Žilnik (a pivotal figure of the Yugoslav Black Wave movement, and the subject of two Anthology retrospectives in recent years), who will be here in person!
“We’re grateful for the opportunity to share some of the highlights of the recent edition of Doclisboa International Film festival. We’ve chosen to represent the festival via several pairings. In their formal rigor and their penetrating reflection on the contemporary world, Nate Lavey’s THE STRONGEST LIGHTNING STRIKES NOT FROM DARK SKIES and Angela Summereder’s B FOR BARTLEBY share a resonance with the work of Jean-Marie Straub and Danièle Huillet. FIREWOOD (Manel Raga Raga) and TIGER BAY (Carlos Conceição) are by two filmmakers who exemplify the extraordinary vibrancy of contemporary Portuguese and Spanish cinema, and who each possess a unique imaginary entirely their own. And we pair Hassen Ferhani’s powerful STUDIO BAUMETTES with a compilation of films by Gabriel Veyre, a pioneer of early cinema and a cinematographer for the Lumière brothers. Through the images of Veyre – who had the privilege of filming the world for the first time, as the cinema was being invented – we’re able to find a renewed wonder in the medium. And finally, we take the opportunity of this carte blanche to present the U.S. premiere of the latest feature film by the great Želimir Žilnik, whose first-ever complete retrospective was organized by Doclisboa in 2015, and who remains one of the festival’s most cherished filmmakers. Once again, Žilnik offers us a film as a handshake – the simplest act of human solidarity and warm consolation.” –Boris Nelepo, Cecilia Barrionuevo, Cíntia Gil, and Hélder Beja, DOCLISBOA
