REVELATIONS OF THE MIDDLE AGES

March 25 – April 4

March 25-April 4, 2026

This spring, Anthology presents the U.S. premiere of REVELATIONS OF DIVINE LOVE, the new feature by filmmaker and critic Caroline Golum. Based on the life and work of 14th-century mystical anchorite and writer Julian of Norwich, REVELATIONS combines – to inspired and elegant effect – deep research, unfashionably sincere meditations on matters spiritual and physical, resourceful and charmingly stylized set design, and a loving nod to the history of cinematic depictions of the Middle Ages.

To put the film in context, and help demonstrate the cinematic genealogy of this decidedly DIY entry into the medieval genre, we’ve invited Golum to present a small selection of films that influenced the creation of her sophomore feature.

“Mythic and misunderstood, the medieval era has bewitched artists and scholars since Venetian poet Petrarch coined the term ‘Dark Ages’ in his ‘De sui ipsius et multorum ignorantia’ in the late 14th century. Originally referring to the intellectual and political vacuum created by the fall of the Roman Empire, the pesky sobriquet stuck, defining art and academia’s interpretation of the era well into the 20th century. While historians in our present age have finally caught up, filmmakers have recognized, represented, and reclaimed the beauty of the Middle Ages throughout the medium’s history.” –Caroline Golum

Guest-programmed by Caroline Golum, who, unless otherwise noted, wrote the individual film descriptions.

Special thanks to Bret Berg (AGFA) and Amy Rynne (Park Circus).
