FOR THE BIRDS

April 28-May 5
Following our week-long premiere engagement of the film RED BIRDS, Anthology presents a series of films focusing on our feathered friends to celebrate the arrival of Spring and recognize the 40th anniversary of Earth Day.

The rich variety of birds, in terms of size, color, behavior, and song is truly astounding. For example, the ruby-throated hummingbird, which weighs about 3 grams (that's little more than half the weight of a nickel!), can flap its wings up to 75 beats per second, fly backwards (only humming birds can do this), and flies at least 500 miles non-stop when migrating over the Gulf of Mexico. The peregrine falcon can reach speeds of over 200 mph, making it the fastest animal on the planet. The wingspan of the great albatrosses can exceed 11 feet. And the song of the superb lyrebird can imitate not just the sounds of other birds and animals, but also of motorized cameras, car engines, and chainsaws.

The birds and stories explored in this series range from the obsessive quest to confirm the very unlikely existence of the ivory-billed woodpecker in the Big Woods of Eastern Arkansas, to the actual rediscovery in Bermuda of a bird that was thought extinct for over 300 years; from the rooftop pigeon coops and urban hawk populations in NYC, to the even more unexpected wild parrots in the heart of San Francisco; and from Hitchcock's classic, eerie tale of nature on the attack, to the flights of fancy of our finest avant-garde filmmakers - this week at Anthology is -for the birds (and bird nerds!).
