JUNE LEAF ON SCREEN
September 15 – October 15
September 15 & 29 and October 15, 2025
This fall, one of the most exciting exhibitions in recent memory arrives: a survey of the paintings, drawings, and sculptures of the great June Leaf (1929-2024). One of the finest artists of her generation, Leaf was also, for decades, a crucial and beloved figure in the cultural lives of both New York City and Mabou, Nova Scotia, the two places where she and her husband, the photographer and filmmaker Robert Frank, made their homes. Though Leaf has long been revered and treasured by fellow artists and a select group of writers and scholars, opportunities to see her work have been far too rare. That situation is poised to change thanks to “June Leaf: Shooting from the Heart”, the most comprehensive exhibition of the artist’s work in more than three decades, which began at the Addison Gallery of American Art at Phillips Academy and will be on view at the Grey Art Museum at New York University throughout the fall and early winter.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Anthology hosts three programs of films and videos that document June Leaf’s life and work, and attempt to capture her profoundly creative, exploratory, and uncompromising spirit. Organized in close collaboration with the Grey Art Museum, the series will include short films by Jem Cohen, a new feature documentary about Leaf and Frank’s life in Mabou, a program of films and videos by Robert Frank in which Leaf has a significant presence, and a very special panel discussion with some of Leaf’s closest collaborators and admirers: Alice Attie, Jem Cohen, Sara Driver, and Laura Israel.
“June Leaf: Shooting from the Heart” is on view at the Grey Art Museum at New York University from September 9-December 13, 2025. For more info visit: https://greyartmuseum.nyu.edu/exhibition/june-leaf-shooting-from-the-heartseptember-9-december-13-2025/

The opening night program, on Mon, Sept 15, will be followed by a panel discussion on June Leaf’s life and work, with artist Alice Attie and filmmakers Jem Cohen, Sara Driver, and Laura Israel!
