MALCOLM MCLAREN

January 22 – January 28

January 22-28, 2026

“Malcolm McLaren was one of the few people I’ve met who left the world different than he found it. […] Starting with his clothes shops, then with the Sex Pistols, his own sound works, finally in the films he made in the 21st century, he kept faith with the old Situationist ideal of flooding the market – which meant money, products, entertainments, art and politics – with desires the market was incapable of satisfying.” –Greil Marcus, 2011

Malcolm McLaren (1946-2010) was a pop cultural visionary and icon who created groundbreaking work for nearly 40 years, in almost every known medium (including music, art, fashion, film, TV, music videos, and more). An artist who created politicized work in commercial media, he is perhaps best known for his shop at 430 King’s Road (Sex and Seditionaries) where he sold the clothing he designed with his then-girlfriend Vivienne Westwood, while simultaneously managing the Sex Pistols.

To celebrate what would have been McLaren’s 80th birthday (on January 22nd), Anthology joins forces with Young Kim, executor of the Estate of Malcolm McLaren, to survey his rarely seen or discussed moving-image work. The series explores McLaren’s relationship to film – a medium that he cared about deeply and with which he worked up until the very end of his life – and includes two recently rediscovered works that will be screening publicly for the very first time: his unfinished art school film project, OXFORD STREET (1969-71), and documentation of his 1980s Worlds End catwalk shows in Paris.

Young Kim and other McLaren collaborators, including artist and designer Nick Egan and producer Eugenia Melian, will participate in post-screening discussions during the series.

Guest-programmed by Young Kim, McLaren’s creative and romantic partner for the last twelve years of his life, and the executor of his estate. Her first book, “A Year On Earth With Mr. Hell”, about an affair with punk rocker Richard Hell, is also a story about her grief for McLaren. She is currently finishing a book about her life with McLaren.
