ACROSS THE MOVI-VERSE
November 10 – November 11
November 10 & 11, 2026
To celebrate the publication – by the Film Desk – of "Across the Movi-verse: Writing on Film, 2011–2021", a new collection by the one and only J. Hoberman, Anthology has invited Hoberman to guest-curate two evenings worth of programs, featuring films discussed in the pages of the new volume. Gathering together pieces written by Hoberman since his departure from the Village Voice in 2010, and originally appearing in Film Comment, Artforum, The Nation, Harper’s, Tablet, and elsewhere, "Across the Movi-verse" is a characteristically invaluable treasure trove of essays, articles, and reviews by one of the most thoughtful, penetrating, wide-ranging, and culturally astute critical minds in contemporary film culture. The book features Hoberman’s reflections on 21st-century cinema, society, and politics, as well as retrospective pieces on some of the artists, films, and fellow critics he’s engaged most deeply with through the years, such as Jack Smith, Jonas Mekas, the Kuchar brothers, and Manny Farber. For the Anthology screenings, we’ll be devoting one evening to Jack Smith (via Jerry Tartaglia’s archival reclamation HAMLET IN THE RENTED WORLD and Smith’s beloved COBRA WOMAN) and one to a very special pairing of the 1960s sci-fi oddity THE CREATION OF THE HUMANOIDS (reportedly a favorite of Andy Warhol’s) and its spawn, the Kuchars’ SINS OF THE FLESHAPOIDS.
