LIVES OF EMINENT SORCERERS: THE MAGICIAN’S CINEMA

December 12 – December 16

December 12-16, 2026

Newly published from Inpatient Press, Ed Halter’s debut fantasy novel Lives of Eminent Sorcerers and Other Readings takes its formal inspiration from the found-footage work of artists like Bruce Conner, Dara Birnbaum, and Craig Baldwin to create a collection of literary ephemera encompassing the history of ideas, across many centuries, in an alternate world. To celebrate its release, Halter has assembled a quaternity of programs looking at some of the most fantastic cinematic depictions of magicians, from the occult visions of Kenneth Anger, Derek Jarman, and Tommy Turner, to the imaginary worlds of Méliès, Bakshi and Disney, as well as a rare screening of Rex Ingram’s THE MAGICIAN, silent Hollywood’s infamous crypto-biopic of Aleister Crowley.

Guest-programmed by Ed Halter, who wrote the series introduction and the individual film descriptions.

Special thanks to Ed Halter; Mitch Anzuoni (Inpatient Press); Ramin Afshari (Walt Disney Studios); Richard Hillard, Hannah Prouse, and George Watson (BFI); George Schmalz (Kino Lorber); and Tommy Turner.
